Hi

I just wondered whether anyone has any advice on joining the gym , my RA is not to bad at the mo, I really need to lose weight & tone up.

I've never been a big lover of gyms but my husband & a couple of friends have recently joined and have lost weight & toned up.

Just wondered if anyone gores to the gym and whether they find it ok with their RA.

I can help you Lou!

I joined curves in May!
It's about £34 per month, one off join fee...can't remember off hand.

You get shown around the equipment, weighed (hate it) but I go for mobility with my ra and knee replacement.

It's a ladies gym of all ages/fitness levels/sizes.

Good music and I do what I feel able to do.

Their music (fine by me).
You have 30 seconds on each equipment, go round 2 1/2 times (30 min sessions)

Hope this helps? Or try your local leisure centre.

Hi Jane

Thanks so much for your advice, that's great. ThumpUp

I keep putting things off because I keep thinking everything is bad for our joints. But surely doing some exercise will strengthen them.

So u haven't any nasty flares from joining?

For the first time in years I went on my bike the other week, I did fall off but that was because I was too being gassing to my friend I wasn't paying attention. I fell in a nettle bush LOL it was very funny LOL

Does your GP do referrals to your local gym? Mine does, it use to be free for 12 weeks but I suppose because of the cutbacks this is no longer available but I would get a good reduction on classes.

There is certain times that I could go to the gym and certain classes like pilates and tia chi that I can also go to.

It's worth looking into. Might as well gets some perks if possible.

Hi I joined a gym when I was not long diagnosed as I was determined to keep moving if only a little bit! At first I could barely get into the pool but now find that swimming and gentle stuff in the gym really helps me feel good. Start slowly and just do as much as you feel able to cope with and don't compare yourself with the lycra crewSmile

Hello Lou

I go to curves - ladies gym with no fit in body shape and fit in fitness egos!
Ladies of all ages & sizes NO mirrors!ThumpUp

My ra isn't good but being a mum and at work I just push because I don't want to get fatter! I do it for mobility reasons and strengthen my knee and muscles around it.

My hand grip isn't great great (hands/fingers of an old witch) so I use the fingerless gloves from sports direct which helps for gripping.

I do my best.....while I can because I don't know what is round the corner with my mobility/ra.

Last week I went 4 times because I haven't gone much (curves min commitment is 12 times a month) also I've had some bad news with work so I have to vent my frustration somewhere!

I know ra effects us all differently but I'm determined to carry on as normally as I can X

Good luck Lou with the gym - give it a go x

Thank you lovely ladies for your advice, just need the courage to go now Wink
Last weekend we went to the Lake District, my husband & his friend climbed Scarfell Pike, so proud of them.

While they did their climb my friend & I did lots of walking, I never praise myself but I was pleased with the amount of walking I did as a few years l would not have been able to have done it. BigGrin

With my bad time at work, I got all green come up after my work out in curves (took it out on the machines) so I run a bell and I was the third person this month to do this but the first ra member to use all my muscles!

Team Jane!

Hi Lou

I use a cross trainer it's much easier on my joints than other equipment. I find my hips get painful pretty quickly on an exercise bike but I can easily do 20-30 minutes on the cross trainer

Good luck finding something that works for you!
